Here's a challenge for you.  Go off and grab your favourite Big Name Brand moisturiser or cleanser.  Now type the ingredients into the Skin Deep database.  Skin Deep assesses the safety of 8,729 ingredients found in over 50,000 cosmetics and personal care products.  If it leaves you wanting to know more about what's in your toiletries, and what the alternatives are, read on.

Chemicals in Skincare Products

Don't be put off by its brown corduroy image (after all, the rather dishy Zac Goldsmith is a Director), The Ecologist magazine has produced a series of excellent articles on dubious chemicals found in cosmetics and skincare products, as well as a host of other household products and brand names.

For further links, the Channel 4 microsite How Toxic Are You? provides a comprehensive list of resources about suspect chemicals in beauty products and chemicals in food.

Chemicals in the Home

We'll post more links shortly on textiles and the fantastic alternatives to mass-produced cotton.

Great Organic & Ethical Guides

Punch drunk? Don't despair!  There are many, many fabulous online mags and listing sites giving you easy and wonderful alternatives to the ubiquitous chemical cocktail. (And let's face it, what girl doesn't like an excuse to buy a new eyeshadow? Our latest fave is the Inika mineral cosmetics range.)

Some of our favourite sites:

  • For a great listings site and marketplace visit Ethical Junction
  • For trend-setters we recommend Ethics Girls
  • For the fashionistas there's simply nothing better than a round up from The Gin Lady (keep an eye out for the fabulous Enamore range)
  • For the FT of ethical consumerism it has to be Ethical Corporation

Finally, for a lighter view on all this pregnancy and parenting malarchy, visit the Milk & Honey Organics blog!

Have fun!
